About Seth P. Waxman: Seth P. Waxman, one of the nation’s premier Supreme Court advocates, was 41st Solicitor General of the United States from 1997 – 2001. In 2009, Waxman and (then) Solicitor General and (current) Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan argued for the Federal Elections Commission (FEC) and Senator John McCain in Citizens United v. Federal Elections Commission. He has delivered over 75 oral arguments in the US Supreme Court and won landmark rulings in a number of cases including Boumediene v. Bush, McConnell v. FEC, and Roper v. Simmons.

About Citizens United: The Supreme Court's 5-4 in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, released in January 2010, made it OK for corporations and labor unions to spend unlimited sums of money to convince people to vote for or against candidatesand opened the floodgates for unregulated dark money. The decision gives mega wealthy special interests the power to make unlimited donations and use it to buy advertising, most of it negative.

About Maine Citizens for Clean Elections: Maine Citizens for Clean Elections is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization working to ensure that Maine’s campaign finance laws, elections, and government serve the public interest, both in principle and in practice. We engage Maine people from across the political spectrum, using research, education, and outreach to further fairness, inclusion, and opportunity in our politics.

About MCCE Action: MCCE Action advocates for campaign finance laws, elections, and government that serve the public interest, both in principle and in practice. We support measures that increase fairness, inclusion, and opportunity in our politics and promote robust participation by Maine people in their government.

MCCE and MCCE Action believe that Maine's first-in-the-nation public funding system is a model for the rest of the country and for federal elections. We believe that the historic role of our organization as an independent voice, free of any partisan agenda, is as necessary today as it was during the passage and implementation of the law.
